Hackney Housing Supply Programme.
Signage and wayfinding. London 2019–2021

EN This signage system was developed along with Al–Jawad Pike. Its main objective is to respond to the structural and operational requirements of the buildings, while also elevating the quality of the public realm through a considered choice of typography and materials. The numbering and place-name elements are to be made from custom concrete blocks, matching the shade of brick used on the walls. The block containing the flat number is a square module with an area defined by the length of a standard metric brick. Accordingly, the name of the development sits within a longer block following the same modular logic. This Place Name would be placed at the top edge of the planters in both of the entrance points, without further disruption to the façades. The numbering and lettering should be cast onto the concrete surface without disruption to wall planes. The signage uses a bespoke typographic system with a particular emphasis on numerals, first developed for Mandeville Mews. The letterforms take inspiration from the work of Edward Johnston, Eric Gill, and Stephenson Blake. Whose type designs were extensively used in public housing and transportation through the XX century.

ES Un sistema de señaletica desarrollado junto con Al–Jawad Pike que responde a los requisitos estructurales y operativos de los edificios, al mismo tiempo que se eleva la calidad del espacio público a través de una elección considerada de tipografía y materiales. Los elementos de numeración y nombre del lugar se harán a partir de bloques de hormigón preformados, a juego con el tono del ladrillo utilizado en las paredes. El número de piso es un módulo cuadrado con un área definida por la longitud de un ladrillo estándar. El nombre del edificio se encuentra dentro de un bloque más largo siguiendo la misma lógica modular. Este nombre de lugar se colocaría en el borde superior de ambos puntos de entrada, sin interrupciones en las fachadas. La numeración y las letras se colocan sobre la superficie sin interrumpir los planos verticales. La señaletica utiliza un sistema tipográfico a medida con un énfasis particular en los números, desarrollado junto a Christopher Lawson. Las formas de las letras se inspiran en el trabajo de Edward Johnston, Eric Gill y Stephenson Blake. Cuyos diseños tipográficos se utilizaron ampliamente en la viviendas sociales y transportes públicos durante el siglo XX.
